A Timaru woman admitted 10 charges of supplying methamphetamine and cannabis on Friday when the judge said he would not impose a full-time custodial sentence.
Yana Anne Johnstone, 37, was scheduled to appear before Judge Mark Callaghan in the Timaru District Court for the first time as she faced six separate charges for supplying methamphetamine and four charges for supplying cannabis plant.
Johnstone’s attorney, Paul McMenamin, said she was interested in an indication of the conviction to Judge Callaghan, responding that given the charges “it would not be a full-time custodial sentence”.
McMenamin asked “is that a formal indication?” and Crown Prosecutor Shawn McManus added: “The Crown is not against an electronically controlled penalty”.
The case was adjourned and when recalled about 15 minutes later, Johnstone, who had first appeared in Timaru District Court in January on the charges, pleaded guilty to all 10 charges.
The offer to supply a class C drug (cannabis) was on August 26, September 2, 3 and 10, while the offers to supply a class A drug (methamphetamine) on 2.6 (four times) and September 28-29. all in 2021 and all to the same person.
No convictions were filed on the guilty pleas and Johnston was held on bail until September 16 for sentencing with Judge Callaghan who ordered a pre-sentence report and alcohol and drug assessments.
