President Joe Biden visited a hospital in East Jerusalem on Friday and compared the historic situation of Irish Catholics with that of Palestinians.
“My background and my family’s background is Irish-American and we have a long history of not being fundamentally different from the Palestinian people with Britain and their attitude to Irish Catholics over the years, spanning 400 years,” he said. Biden.
But Biden’s attempt to compare the Irish to the Palestinians and the English to the Israelis paints a fundamentally wrong picture of the region’s historic struggles.
During his speech, the president quoted one of his favorite Irish poets Seamus Heaney from the poem The Cure of Troy, describing it as “classic Irish, but could suit Palestinians too”.
He read a sentence from the poem:
History says: Hope not
On this side of the grave.
But then, once in a lifetime
The long-awaited tidal wave
From righteousness may arise,
And hope and history rhyme.
Biden noted that his colleagues in the United States Senate made fun of him for always quoting Irish poets.
“They thought I did it because I’m Irish. That’s not why I did it. I did it because they are the best poets in the world,’ he said, causing a few chuckles in the room.
Speaking to the public, Biden announced a commitment of $100 million in United States funding to Palestinian hospitals in East Jerusalem.
