Huge queues have formed in front of a Manchester petrol station, selling fuel for more than 20 cents a liter below the national average.

Hassan Mohammed, one of the bosses of Limes Service Station in Walkden, said they decided to cut prices to help locals who are struggling with the cost of living crisis.

The station currently offers prices of 169.9 pence for unleaded and 185.9 pence for diesel – far less than the national average of 191.2p for petrol and 199.1p for diesel, according to Confused.com.

Co-director Hassan is overwhelmed by the reactions.

“The response has been fantastic,” he said.

‘All customers were very grateful. It’s been non-stop all day, the pumps have been on all day.

“Some people couldn’t believe what we were doing until they came down and saw it for themselves.

“We’ve had a lot of people tell us they’re glad it’s not a gimmick of a day and they’ll be back.”

Hassan says “hundreds” of people have visited the gas station so far today and he expects demand to continue.

“We’ve been blown away, it’s been very busy, but everyone has been so positive about it,” he added.

“I’m pretty sure we’ll be busy all week now that more people have heard what we’re doing.”

Earlier today, Hassan said he hopes to keep prices as low as possible for at least a week and will continue if he can.

He said, “My goal is to hold these prices for at least the next week and then, if pricing allows, we’ll try to hold them for as long as possible.”

Hassan said he chose to cut fuel prices so drastically because he wanted to give back to the Walkden community at a time when costs for essentials have soared. He said he could have done this by putting his savings back into the company.

He previously said: ‘People’s disposable income is being affected on a massive scale and we know that gasoline is one of the biggest costs for people. We thought we wanted to do something for our community in Walkden.

“We’ve been here seven years now and we’ve always tried to support our community.”
