Awkward moment when Naga Munchetty is ‘rude’ to BBC reporter broadcasting from the ice cream factory… before being dressed by co-star Charlie Stayt for ‘lowering the tone’ on the show
- BBC Breakfast went live to Hannah Miller at an ice cream factory in Nantwich
- Naga told business correspondent she ‘don’t like ice cream or cold food’
- Her co-host Charlie criticized her on live TV, prompting Naga to apologize
BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty took a dress off co-host Charlie Stayt and is facing backlash online after she behaved “rude” during an ice cream factory coverage on this morning’s show.
The interview, conducted by reporter Hannah Miller, saw the program go live at Snugburys ice cream factory in Nantwich just after 9am.
After a friendly exchange with the factory worker and sampling some of the flavors on offer, Mrs. Miller returned to the studio and said to Naga and Charlie, “It’s definitely not too early. I bet you wish you were here right now!’
As the ice cream machine laughed, Naga intervened to say, “I don’t like ice cream Hannah.”
Naga (right) and Charlie (left) seemed to have some underlying tension after the segment, before Charlie made a point of returning to usual breakfast programming
Company correspondent Hannah Miller did her best to maintain the fun and glee of the segment, but the ice cream factory worker was clearly quite embarrassed
The drama arose after Mrs. Miller tried some of the ice cream made at the Nantwich factory, before quipped, ‘I bet you wish you were here right now!’
Charlie and Naga have had some charged moments in recent months, with viewers suggesting they’re not fans of each other
She went on to say that she doesn’t like “cold food” nor is she a fan of brownies.
The clip grew rather frosty as Naga spoke, with some awkward pauses.
But the corporate presenter tried to add some fun to the process at the end, telling the rather embarrassed factory worker, “Well, I’m having a great time.”
As the camera snapped, Naga added, “Well, I’m glad you’re enjoying the ice cream.”
But that wasn’t the end of the awkward encounter, as Naga’s co-host Charlie called her out for what she said on live TV.
“Do you think you’d rather set the tone there, if you don’t mind me saying so?” Charlie remarked – he seemed visibly surprised by Naga’s answers during the clip and looked at her intently.
But Naga’s reaction didn’t sit well with the viewers, she just laughed and said, “Oh, be quiet, come on.”
She then said ‘I’m sorry’, but smiled again.
Charlie kept staring at his co-host and said, “Well, she was working hard on the story and then…”
The clip went viral on social media after Chris posted on Twitter, claiming that Naga had tried to ‘make everything about herself’
He then seemed to remember they were in the air and quickly switched back to the autocue to resume normal breakfast programming.
The rather tense exchange didn’t go unnoticed, and viewers were quick to share their reactions by calling Naga “rude,” “mean” and claiming she was trying to make the show “all about herself.”
Others praised her co-host and Mrs. Miller for their hard work and pledged to support the factory worker at gunpoint.
But some viewers saw no problem in Naga’s interrogation, pointing out that she apologized after the segment was over.
Her supporters criticized Charlie for “rudely undressing her on national TV.”
Meanwhile, BBC Breakfast posted a clip of the interaction on social media, captioning it with Naga’s “I don’t like ice cream” commentary. The post continued: ‘Who on the #BBCBreakfast team reveals they’re not a fan of ice cream?’
Naga made headlines earlier this week when it was announced that the BBC is giving her a pay raise of £110,000, meaning her salary will now be £365,000 a year.
This includes her work on BBC Breakfast, radio and Panorama.
