Debate with Tory leaders: Audience falls silent when Guru-Murthy asks if they trust politicians | Politics | News

The five remaining Tory leadership candidates were greeted with silence when a simple question was asked to the public during tonight’s first televised debate. At the humiliating moment, debate host Krishnan Guru-Murthy asked the audience to raise their hands if they trusted politicians. On the screen, it seemed as if not a single member of the audience raised their hands while the audience remained silent.

Mr. Guru-Murthy was stunned by the response and simply replied, “Goodness. Right.”

@EdwardTHardy tweeted: “Humiliating moment for all Conservative Party leaders.

“Krishnan Guru-Murthy asks the public to raise their hands if, after what they have heard tonight, they trust politicians.

“Nobody raised their hand.”

Rob O’Hanrahan of Virgin Media News said: “Very striking moment in the #C4LeaderDebate where the public is asked to raise their hands if they trust politicians, and nobody does.”

Independent columnist @Nadine_Writes tweeted: “During the #C4LeaderDebate, @krishgm asked the public if any of them trust politicians.

“No one raised their hand. The bleak reality.’

Trust in politicians took up the first half hour of the debate.

This is because a TechneUK survey conducted exclusively for Express.co.uk shows that Ms Mordaunt has seen the biggest increase in popularity among Britons in the last three days.

Nineteen percent of the 1,645 Britons polled this morning said they believed she would become the party’s top leader, an eight percent increase from a similar poll on July 12.

Rishi Sunak remains the favorite with 22 percent.

However, his support has barely moved since Tuesday, only increasing by two percent, with Ms Mordant quickly closing the gap on the front-runner.
