The UK is currently experiencing a heat wave that is likely to see record-breaking highs on Monday and Tuesday – but not everywhere will be this hot.
the rising temperatures come with serious health warnings and led to the Met Office issuing its first red warning for extreme heat.
The warning covers an area of London until Manchesterand as far as the Vale of York.
But while the south and southeast of the UK will be sweltering not all of the UK will experience such heat.
The coolest parts of the UK are all in the north and northeast of Scotland.
On Monday, when? there is a 50% chance that the temperature will reach 40°C somewhere in the south east it will be a relatively cool 14°C in Wick in the far north of Scotland.
The Met Office has forecast highs of 18°C for Monday afternoon in Aberdeen, Stornoway and Tiree in the Inner Hebrides.
Lerwick, in the Shetlands, is expected to see temperatures of 15°C on Monday, while nighttime temperatures are expected to turn a few degrees cooler, dropping to around 12°C.
On Tuesday, the coolest spots in the UK will be back in Scotland and also Londonderry in Northern Ireland, where maximums of up to 17°C are reached.
Portree on the Isle of Skye is expected to reach 17°C and 18°C in Lerwick.
In Kirkwall on Orkney it will be 19°C and in Durness 20°C.
Grahame Madge, a Met Office spokesperson, has said there is an 80% chance of breaking the UK’s all-time temperature record, and a 50% chance of reaching 40°C somewhere in the UK next week.
“Most likely that would be within the red extreme heat warning area,” he said.
“Probably the most likely areas to look at are north of London and up to Lincolnshire, inland.
“Somewhere like Peterborough, Grantham, Sandy, Stevenage, those kinds of areas, A1 corridor.”
He said temperatures of up to 40C would be a “historic event.”
“If we hit 40°C, that’s a very iconic threshold and shows that climate change is now with us,” he said.
‘Climate change makes this much more likely.’
