The journalist further criticized French President Emmanuel Macron for being “wrong” about NATO. President Macron took a tougher line on Russia on Wednesday, saying that Europe needed to send a strong signal to Ukraine as he wanted to allay concerns in Kiev and some European allies over his previous stance on Moscow.
Edginton wrote in The Telegraph: “Macron is wrong. It has been proven that the EU is brain dead, not NATO.
“Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has shown that Brussels is slow and ineffective.
“For the West to be effective, nation-states must be united and act quickly.
“Britain’s decisive support for Ukraine makes the EU’s foreign policy seem defunct.”
NATO and EU states are pushing for better tracing of weapons supplied to Ukraine in response to fears that criminal groups are smuggling them out of the country and into Europe’s black market.
Since Russia launched its war on Ukraine, Western states have pledged more than $10 billion (£8.4 billion) in military aid, from portable rocket launchers and armored vehicles to rifles and massive amounts of ammunition.
Previously, President Macron had described NATO as “brain dead”, highlighting what he sees as diminishing commitment to the transatlantic alliance by its main guarantor, the US.
In an interview with The Economist, he cited the fact that the US had not consulted NATO before withdrawing troops from northern Syria.
