FIVE people were killed in a crash on a highway in Hardin, Montana on Friday night, authorities said.

About 20 vehicles collided on Interstate 90, Montana Highway Patrol Sgt Jay Nelson said.

Authorities suspect that the weather played a role in the crash.

“It looks like there was a strong wind, creating a dust storm with no visibility,” Nelson said.

Governor of Montana, Greg Gianforte released a statement on Twitter after the crash.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of a mass casualty crash near Hardin. Please join me in prayer to lift the victims and their loved ones.

“We are grateful to our first responders for their service.”

It is not known how many people were injured, Nelson said, but additional ambulances had to be called to the scene.

“As we got closer to the dust storm, you could see the vehicles in the ditch,” motorist Linda Uffelman said. KTVQ.

“There was a camper van, the whole side of it was blown off, the top was off. Vehicle fronts were smashed in.”

Video on social media showed a side of the highway filled with vehicles as thick clouds were seen overhead.
