BRITs are being attacked by a relentless heat wave this week – and our home appliances could make things worse.
Appliances that need to be plugged in tend to generate quite a bit of heat, making a room even hotter on scorching days.
This is especially true if they are in a small space with little ventilation, such as a study.
All appliances give off some energy in the form of heat, but some are bigger culprits than others.
This is because they are not very energy efficient, meaning they release more waste energy.
Lighting (particularly incandescent and halogen), TVs, dishwashers, stoves and refrigerators are among the worst offenders.
Washing machines, dryers and desktop PCs also give off a lot of heat.
Make sure that you do not use, for example, your washing machine and dishwasher on the hottest days.
It may also be worth unplugging devices you have on standby during the day, such as TVs.
Not only will these cool your home, but they can also save you some money on your electric bill.
Of course, you can’t turn off ALL your appliances – not without ruining all the food in your fridge.
But anything you can avoid using as British braces for the hottest day of the year will keep your home cool.
You can also get a neat electric fan hack to combat rising mercury.
Your fan is designed to move air around the room, drawing it in at the back and blowing it out at the front.
This keeps us cool because faster moving air from the fan pushes away the warmer air that comes in contact with our skin.
It helps us feel cooler because moisture in the form of sweat on our skin evaporates faster in the presence of air.
One way to make that air feel even COOLER is to hold a bowl of ice in front of your fan.
As it evaporates, the steam will rise in front of the fan where it forms a lovely cool breeze that is pushed across the room.
