For those who have been living under a rock for the past few days, it’s hot and it’s getting hotter.
Usually a heat wave means parks, beaches, riverbanks and pubs are absolutely overrun with Brits taking the opportunity to soak up the sun.
But the Met Office has asked people to stay indoors as part of a… extreme red weather warning indicating a life threat.
However, there is one group of people who don’t even need a weather warning to stay out of the sun: redheads.
People with red hair have different genetics than others because they produce enough of their own vitamin D to need very little time in the sun. As a result, their skin is prone to sunburn.
Luckily for redheads, the Showcase movie theater chain has them covered next week.
The company is offering a free movie ticket to anyone with red hair on the hottest days of the heat wave – expected Monday and Tuesday.
General Manager Mark Barlow said: ‘While the UK is enjoying some much needed sunny weather, we know how hard some people find the heat.
‘To cope with the heat wave, we’re offering redheads free access to our cinema screens this Monday and Tuesday so they can enjoy some of the great films on offer in the comfort of our air-conditioned cinema screens and make sure they stay protected. against the sun.’
If you are a redhead and you hope to take refuge with this offer, all you have to do is go to the nearest Showcase cinema.
The chain has 17 cinemas in the UK, including London, Cardiff, Glasgow, Bristol, Leeds and Liverpool.
Redhead or not, you need to be careful in the coming week as the heat wave is considered very dangerous.
Penny Endersby, the CEO of the Met Office, even said it needed treatment as serious as a hurricane warning.
She said: “Here in the UK we are used to treating a hot spell as an opportunity to go play in the sun, this is not that kind of weather, our lifestyle and infrastructure are not adapted to what is to come.
“Take the warnings we give as seriously as a red or orange from us for wind or snow and follow the advice.”
