Boris Johnson skips major COBRA gathering to hold farewell party at Checkers estate | Politics | News

Formal invitations were reportedly sent out earlier this week for the event on Sunday at the prime minister’s official country retreat in Buckinghamshire.

A Tory source told Sky News: “The invitation comes from Mr and Mrs Johnson.

“It’s their farewell party at Checkers this weekend.

“Partners and children are all invited.”

Downing Street did not deny that Mr Johnson threw a party at Checkers this weekend.

A spokesman for No. 10 said: “As is customary all political events would be for my political colleagues. It would not be a question for me, but I have confirmed that the Prime Minister will be in Checkers this weekend.”

It comes as Cabinet Secretary Kit Malthouse is chairing a Cobra emergency meeting today to discuss the escalating heat wave.

A national emergency has been declared and the UK’s first-ever red warning of extreme heat has been issued as temperatures can reach a scorching 40C next week.

Meteorologists have warned that the record high temperatures could endanger lives.

Asked if the prime minister was involved in the heat wave discussions, his spokesman said: “As always, the prime minister will be kept informed of the latest information.”

It was urged whether he would participate in Checkers talks, but the spokesman added: “He has been kept thoroughly informed of the latest situation.”
