Charlotte Church has said her “worst job” as a pop star was a double-edged sword, because she felt like a “commodity.”

The singer recently graced our screens as the runner-up in the final of The masked singer UK 2022 as Mushroom and, when asked about her career transition from classical music to pop stardom, she said she eventually felt like she was “a thing that needed to be sold.”

The 36-year-old Welsh singer has been in the public eye since she was 11, when she sang Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Pie Jesu live on the phone. This morning in 1997.

In a recent Q&A with the guardshe explained that she felt she had given herself away to be “sold” as a cog in the music industry.

When asked, “What’s the worst job you’ve done?” she answered, “It was a two-edged sword, but because it was a… major label artistI felt like a commodity, a thing to sell.’

She released her debut pop album Tissues and Issues in 2005, which reached the top five in the UK and a number of EPs followed.

The soprano singer has sold more than 10 million records worldwide and has released six studio albums to date, spanning 1998 and 2010.

Charlotte, aka Mushroom, also revealed that “trusting some men” would be different if she could edit her past, plus, she’d prefer fame over anonymity and gave birth to the closest she’s come to death.

The mother of three also said her “biggest disappointment” was the result of the Leveson study: when she testified for it in 2011.

“As an artist, I find it hard to be taken seriously because my credibility has been shattered,” she said.

In addition to her distinguished music career, Charlotte is also known for her adventure in the TV world, where she hosts her eponymous series The Charlotte Church Show on Channel 4.

She also played Mrs Ogmore Pritchard in a BBC adaptation of Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, and fronted a 2018 documentary on mental health.
