A three-year-old boy has died after being hit by a tractor on a farm near Tottington in Bury.

Greater Manchester Police were called by the North West Ambulance Service shortly before 12.45pm today (Saturday 16 July) after an ambulance was signaled to stop by a vehicle carrying a seriously injured child on Rochdale Old Road.

Officers arrived at the scene and the boy was tragically pronounced dead by paramedics before he could be taken to hospital.

Inquiries soon learned that the boy had suffered critical injuries after a collision with a tractor on farmland off Bentley Hall Road.

The tractor driver assists the police with investigations and a scene remains in place on the farm as investigators from Bury CID work with colleagues from the Health and Safety Executive to determine the circumstances of the incident.

There was a scene on Rochdale Old Road to allow for the initial investigations. The cordon has since been lifted.

Specialized officers are supporting the boy’s family and Greater Manchester Police are asking that the family’s privacy be respected during this devastating time.

Chief Inspector Ian Partington, Bury District GMP, said: ‘This is a heartbreaking incident in which a young boy has tragically lost his life and my thoughts are with his family and loved ones who will be utterly devastated by today’s events. .

“Despite his family igniting an ambulance as they rushed him to hospital, unfortunately the boy could not be rescued after the best efforts of paramedics; I can’t imagine how painful this was for those involved.

“We are working to ensure that a full investigation is carried out, and the farmland that we know of this incident remains cordoned off, so that our investigators and partners at the HSE can conduct a thorough investigation to determine exactly what is going on here.” happened.’

Strangers on social media have been inundated to send good messages to the boy’s family, describing the clash as “tragic”, “terrible” and “heartbreaking”.

Adding to the tragedy, there are reports of a second, unrelated collision on Rochdale Old Road as the boy’s family notified paramedics of the boy’s condition.

A Greater Manchester police car also collided with another vehicle as officers drove to the scene as part of the emergency services.

A number of people in the car were taken to hospital as a precaution, but no police officers were injured, GMP said.
