Brexit strategy slammed by Justin Webb who says UK needs more economic growth | politics | News

David Davis, former Brexit secretary, discussed Britain’s economic growth with journalist Justin Webb.

Mr Webb accused British politicians, who wanted Brexit, of never having a plan to leave England out of the EU in the first place.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other Tory ministers have backfired over delays in reaching Brexit agreements with other countries.

The former Brexit secretary has advised Mr Webb to pay attention to how much the British economy has grown since his departure compared to Italy, Germany and France which are still in the EU.

Mr Davis told BBC Radio 4’s Today program: “The first issue was to pay the bills, and if the government stops you from doing so, it’s a real problem for a Tory government.”

Mr Webb added: “Is there a much more fundamental problem? You guys who wanted Brexit, you Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak and others, said we can transform our economy if we are freed from some of the rules, some of the bureaucracy of the European Union.

“But you never worked out a plan to do that.”

“Or you did not agree, so you think it’s about seeing poor management of the Thames, and Boris Johnson thinks it’s about spending large sums of money on infrastructure.”

Mr Davis said: “Well, a small amount of it is about that, I mean if you want to debate Brexit, we can do that in the minutes that we have.

“But look at the four largest countries in Europe, our France, Germany and Italy, who has had the most growth since 2016?

“It’s us, you know, we’ve actually had the most economic success.”

Britain tried to secure Brexit agreements with EU countries, but it was a challenge due to a lack of confidence from members of the European Union.

Chi Onwurah, Minister of Shadow Science of Labor, told Express.co.uk exclusively that it was Mr. Johnson’s approach to negotiations which meant that the dispute continued.

Ms Onwurah told Express.co.uk: “It is not surprising that there is a lack of confidence on the part of the European Union as the Prime Minister storms out of rooms forever and threatens them.

“We (Labor) were clear that we would have a much more pragmatic, sensitive and down-to-earth approach to negotiation.

“We would not be in this position now, because we would not have shouted and stormed.”
