Daisy Edgar Jones has described the ‘life-changing’ fame that came with starring in Normal people.
In 2020, while the whole world was locked in our homes and every day was exactly the same, Daisy and her co-star Paul Mescal were becoming A-List Celebrities Overnight.
The BBC TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s incredible novel saw the Irish and British actors put in the spotlightwith everyone from Dua Lipa to Kim Kardashian gushing about the show.
In normal times, Daisy and Paul would have walked the red carpet, on star-studded talk shows and shoulder to shoulder with other celebrities.
But with the world as it was, they too were locked up indoors – but now they were one of the most famous names in the industry.
In a new interview, Daisy reflects on the speed and magnitude of fame, and how “strange” it was to go from “just being Daisy to being a full name, being Daisy Edgar-Jones.”
She said The Irish Times she had no “real-time experience” of how famous she had become “because I was still just locked in my house watching Tiger King.”
Daisy, who played Marianne in the critically acclaimed series, described it as “a really slow kind of introduction” to fame, and optimistically said it meant she was “able to really focus on what mattered.”
She added: “I didn’t really have much interaction or experience with it.
“But now that the world has opened up a bit and I can now have a few more people around me, I really feel that.”
Daisy admitted she was in disbelief that it’s been two years since Normal People aired and “people still want to talk about it.”
βIt’s very special because that show means everything to me. So to meet people who loved and connected with it is really just lovely.β
Speaking of her co-star Paul, Daisy said he was “and always will be one of my best friends in the whole world,” revealing the cast – who reunited at Glastonbury – “get as excited and giddy as they are.” being together.
Daisy is now starring in the film adaptation of Delia Owens’ novel Where the crayfish singwhere she plays the lone outsider Kya who becomes embroiled in a complicated murder mystery.
The highly anticipated film, produced by Reese Witherspoon, features a soundtrack featuring a new song by none other than Taylor Swift.
She also co-starred with Andrew Garfield in a new series about the Latter Day Saint (LDS) moment.
The drama, titled Under the Banner of Heaven, is based on Jon Krakauer’s non-fiction bestseller of the same name.
It tells the story of a detective who puts his faith to the test while investigating a murder that has deep ties to LDS fundamentalism.
