Rapper Kodak Black has been arrested on drug charges in Florida and awaits a hearing.
The American star – real name Bill Kapri – was reportedly initially arrested in his car for illegally tinting windows, with American media claimed he was driving a purple Dodge Durango.
According to CNNHis windows appeared to be “darker than the legal limit,” with officers also reportedly discovering that Black’s license and registration had both expired.
While searching the vehicle, authorities are said to have found 31 oxycodone pills, a narcotic that is highly addictive but often prescribed to treat severe pain.
Police also allegedly found $74,960 (£63,230) in cash.
Black, 25, was allegedly charged on Friday, July 15, after being booked into Fort Lauderdale Prison by Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
His two official charges are possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and trafficking of oxycodone.
The rapper’s attorney, Bradford Cohen, shared a statement on Twitter the following day, writing: “Never judge a case based on an arrest. There are always additional facts and circumstances that give rise to a defence, certainly in this case. We’ll bail him out today and settle the case quickly.’
This isn’t Black’s first run-in with the law, as he was sentenced to jail time for gun possession in 2019, before being pardoned by former US President Donald J. Trump in 2021.
Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said in a statement at the time that the musician was “a prominent artist and community leader.”
Reports of Black’s recent arrest follow claims that: he was shot in an altercation in West Hollywood, where a Justin Bieber afterparty took place in February.
Two other victims also reportedly suffered gunshot wounds after a fight broke out, but Black’s injuries were not life-threatening.
The three injured were all taken to hospital, with police confirming the incident was “not gang related.”
Representatives for Kodak Black and the Florida Highway Patrol have been contacted for comment.
