A three-storey warehouse on Electric Lane is on fire and would be used to store items for the adjacent market. The London Fire Brigade said 53 people had called 999 to report the fire, with the first warning coming in at 8.58pm.
Fire brigades from Clapham, West Norwood, Peckham, Old Kent Road, Chelsea and surrounding fire stations are on site, with 15 fire engines.
A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: “Fifteen fire engines and about 100 firefighters have been called to a fire on Electric Avenue in Brixton.”
Surrounding roads were closed when emergency services fought the fire in an alley off Electric Lane.
James Twomey, an editor for the South London Press, wrote on Twitter: “There is currently a massive fire in the Brixton market, an employee said it is an area where items are stocked for the market and there may still be people to be.”
He added that police and firefighters had evacuated people from the area, while footage shows smoke billowing into the air.
Police are reported to have cordoned off Atlantic Avenue and Electric Avenue while firefighters deal with the incident.
Smoke was seen in the air and over railway lines in the South London area after the fire broke out shortly before 9pm.
Labor MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, Helen Hayes, tweeted: “Really shocking to see these scenes of a massive fire in Brixton. My thanks go to the @FireLambeth teams who have been on site and thinking along with the local businesses and affected residents.”
