The first Covid care package came from a local friend. She had put all the goods in a brown paper bag and left it in my mailbox.
Popcorn, chocolate and Cookie Time Cookies are currently sitting neatly in a brown paper bag in a gift box on my work surface.
It’s not my birthday – I have Covid, and it turns out some very considerate friends.
And while it makes me feel loved and supports the fact that I have wonderful friends, it also makes me question my own thoughtfulness as a friend.
Would you like to send your buddy a Covid Care Package, and if so, what’s in it?

It’s about day three or four depending on where you measure it, but I’ve been isolated since Tuesday when I tested positive.
As I was in close contact with a Covid-positive colleague last week, I suspected I might fall prey to the video, so I went in prepared, especially since my husband had been working out of town for over a week. Knowing I would be alone and our 9 month old mini schnauzer, I had homemade soup in the freezer, tissues, Panadol, and ice blocks for a potentially debilitating sore throat.
As I told friends about my Covid status, everyone offered help if I needed it, and I thanked them warmly and said I was resolved.
At least I thought until day two I thought I should have stocked up on snacks to eat while binge-watching Netflix shows.
As I passed my mailbox this morning for Oscar’s daily walk (while distancing myself and donning a mask), I noticed a large brown paper bag. An ever attentive friend delivered exactly what I needed and more. Popcorn, Proper Crisps, tea, a packet of soup, Cookie Time Cookies, a Whittaker’s Blondie block and a fancy bottle of booze.

More goodies arrived by courier from my bestie, leaving me questioning my own thoughtfulness as a friend.
I was overwhelmed and called to thank her.
And a few hours later, as I lay on the couch in front of the fire watching crazy ex girlfrienda courier fell and knocked.
A package from my bestie.
She is recovering from Covid while running her home with two children, a husband and a cat. She lives 400 kilometers away and she thought to order me a special Packaged With Love box. Come in, more Cookie Times, popcorn, chocolate fish, lollipops and a gingerbread man.
As I pondered what wonderful friends I have, including the one who took Oscar to the beach for some much-needed exercise, I also questioned my own friendliness.
I texted my best friend every day to get to her, but I hadn’t done anything special.
With both friends’ birthdays to come, I’ll make sure to give my best this year.

Testing positive for covid was no surprise, but even though I filled my meals in preparation, I didn’t have the sweet treats I craved. (File photo)
