An essential chain for Arthur’s Pass when snow settles on the road

Waka Kotahi Road Restriction was enforced on a part of SH73 on Tuesday morning.

Drivers are advised to pay special attention as restrictions are set and snow will settle on the roads of the South Island.

Wakakotahi reported on Tuesday that the chain was essential and restricted due to the overnight snowfall on Route 73 from Springfield to Arthur’s Pass.

According to a spokeswoman, this pass is closed to towing vehicles, so be especially careful when traveling on this route.

At some Takayama passes, road snow warnings were issued.

MetService issued road snow warnings on Monday for Lewis Pass, Arthur’s Pass, Porters Pass and Lindis Pass. All this lasted until noon on Tuesday.

The chain is essential and there is no towing vehicle.

From early Tuesday to early afternoon, rain is expected to turn into snow. Snow from 5 cm to 8 cm was predicted to drop to 700 m, but around the Lewis Pass there was less snow to 500 m.
