The midfielder proved versatile during last season’s loan spell at Nottingham Forest and helped Steve Cooper’s men return to the Premier League.

But the England Under-21 international admits he would rather play as a defensive or central midfielder than a playmaker.

Garner told Manchester Evening News: “This season I have played as 6, 8 and in the number 10 position.

“For me I enjoy 6 or 8 as long as playing. In the academy I was always a central defender on six or seven but I was moved to midfield and it went from there. I enjoy my time.”

Ten Hag will need reinforcements in midfield after the loss of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

Garner could capitalize on that demand by offering solutions that would save the Dutchman the trouble of looking at the summer transfer window.

But Watford’s ex-mercenary looks set for some immense competition, with Fred, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes ahead of him in the pecking order anyway.

United also signed Christian Eriksenwho mainly plays as an attacking midfielder.

Ten Hag is also determined to reunite with Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong, who blossomed under him at Ajax.

The bosses of Red Devils thought they had reached a breakthrough earlier this week when they agreed a compensation of 72 million pounds for De Jong.

But the deal ran a snag, with claims from the Netherlands international don’t want to leave Barca.
