Microsoft, a major player in the technology industry, is likely to be tweaking the way it delivers major updates to Windows again, which could mean Windows 12 will be released in 2024. The next major version of Windows will now be released in 2024 as Microsoft reverts to a three-year release schedule. According to The Verge, it’s another major shift in the way Microsoft makes Windows. With the release of Windows 10 in 2015, the company originally abandoned the three-year cycle and prioritized the concept of Windows as a Service.
Windows 10 was updated twice a year with major new features, as opposed to a significant release of features every three years in a new Windows version.
Because a Microsoft employee referred to Windows 10 as “the latest version of Windows,” referring to Windows Central, many Windows viewers for years believed that Windows 10 would be the last big-bang release of Windows, according to the story. When asked about the comments, the IT manager replied that they “reflected the way Windows would be offered as a service, constantly offering new innovations and improvements.” Microsoft switched to an annual update schedule for both Windows 10 and Windows 11 with the release of Windows 11 last year.
Microsoft still plans to keep Windows 11 current for the next few years, along with the release of the next version of Windows in 2024. In recent months, the software developer has backed away from its initial promise to release major annual updates to Windows 11 in favor of releasing key features as they become available. The upcoming major upgrade, 22H2, has just been finalized by Microsoft and is expected to be released in September or October.
