Her Majesty canceled her attendance at both the St Paul’s Cathedral Thanksgiving service and the Epsom Derby due to mobility issues, with a spokesperson citing “some inconvenience”. The Ceremony of the Keys is the traditional opening of Holyrood week for the royals who have traveled en masse to Scotland.
Dressed in a light blue coat and hat, the Queen was symbolically presented with the keys to the city by Edinburgh Lord Provost Robert Aldridge. Tradition dictates that the monarch return them and entrust their safekeeping to the elected officials of the city.
The head of state, carrying a walking stick, was accompanied by Prince Edward and Sophie, known as the Earl and Countess of Forfar in Scotland. Meanwhile, Prince Edward, who has taken on some of the responsibilities of the Duke of Edinburgh since his death last year, was also caught up in the fanfare, with someone describing him as a “wonderful representative” for the Queen.
Another user commented on the possibility of Prince Edward taking the title of Duke of Edinburgh when Charles takes the throne.

A source close to Charles said: “The Prince is the Duke of Edinburgh in its present form, and it’s up to him what happens to the title. It doesn’t go to Edward.”
In an interview with the BBC last month, Prince Edward was asked: “You’re going to be the next Duke of Edinburgh, if the Prince of Wales becomes King, is that quite something to take on?”
Edward replied, “In theory it was fine, ages ago, when it was kind of a utopia of my father… do that, so we’ll see. So yeah, it’s going to be quite a challenge to handle that.”
The Earl of Wessex also noted in the past how being awarded the title was “bittersweet” as it could only happen to him “after both my parents have actually died”.
