A MURDER investigation is underway after police found a body while searching for a missing woman.
The grim discovery was made in Havering, east London, in the early morning hours.
While formal identification has yet to take place, the family of missing 21-year-old Hina Bashir of Ilford has been notified.
They are assisted by specialized agents.
A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody.
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams, of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “My thoughts are with Hina’s family who have suffered a terrible loss. We will provide them with all possible support.
“This is a rapidly evolving investigation and a man is in custody. We are convinced that this man and Hina knew each other.
“As our investigation progresses, we will work to develop our understanding of what happened to Hina, not only in the past few days, but also in the weeks leading up to this horrific incident.
“I would urge anyone who thinks they have information that could help us come forward.”
