Nicola Sturgeon failed to “respect people’s will” with the IndyRef2 push, the minister says

NNicola Sturgeon today announced plans for a second referendum on Scottish independence, with SNP leaders aiming to vote in October next year (see full text here).

Sturgeon is expected to explain how to circumvent the UK government, which refuses to give permission to vote.

Technical Minister Chris Philp said this morning that Ms. Sturgeon should respect the results of the 2014 referendum, which was supposed to be a “once in a generation” event.

He told Sky News: “In a referendum in 2014, the Scottish people voted with a fairly clear 10-point difference.

“Nikola Sturgeon at the time and Alex Salmond, the mentor at the time, told the Scottish people very clearly that this would be a once-in-a-generation referendum. It was only a few years ago. And not once in a generation.

“I think Nicola Sturgeon should respect the Scottish will, which was very clearly expressed in the referendum.”
