Stop the press! It’s cold in the United Kingdom.

Okay, not exactly surprising news that the British are not basking in the sun in February. But after the snowfall that closed schools earlier in the year and icy fog descending on London in recent weeks it has been a particularly grim start to 2023.

And even though it is technically spring only a few weeks awaywarmer weather is no guarantee.

In fact, a cold spell has been predicted for most of March. So when might it get warmer and what do the next few weeks have in store?

When will it get warmer?

Currently, the outlook doesn’t look promising for anyone looking to put away their winter coats and thick layers.

Some weather maps have even warned that temperatures in March could reach -10 degrees.

In mid-February, a sudden stratospheric warming occurred near Scandinavia – a weather event typical for this time of year.

The effect on Britain could be mixed – causing extreme weather or… nothing at all.

An example of this is in 2018 when it was blamed for starting up the Beast from the East. But the following year the exact same thing happened and the British felt nothing but a typical late February chill.

Since it takes a few weeks to measure what might happen after the Scandi warming, meteorologists are now gaining more insight. And some maps show that temperatures could drop to minus during this latest cold snap, with the possibility of snow reaching almost every corner of Britain.

What is the forecast for March?

While we’ll have to wait and see if the meteorologists are right, BBC weather have forecasts for the coming weeks.

They expect a colder but drier coming weeks as we enter March.

The forecast explains: ‘It will be rather cold, with temperatures around or slightly below seasonal averages, and there may be a few showers now and then, some of which will be winters in higher elevations.’

‘The second week of March threatens to get a bit colder, because the high pressure moves further north and northwest, especially towards Greenland. At lower elevations, freezing rain and snow showers are possible, and there is a chance that low pressure will push north from the mainland and cause more precipitation.’

“A similar pattern seems to continue until the end of March.”

So, when will it get warmer? We are looking at April at the earliest.

Do not shoot the messenger.
