NZ woman charged with murder of kiwi cutter in US

A New Zealand woman has been charged with manslaughter in the United States after her partner, a shearer also from New Zealand, was stabbed to death.

According to a report from SVInews.com, shearer Andrew Moore worked at the Taliaferro Ranch in southern Lincoln County, near Kemmerer, Wyoming, where his partner Monique Sullivan also worked.

In the early hours of Feb. 20, Sullivan got into a fight with Moore with whom she was dating, court documents said.

They had been drinking heavily and during the argument Sullivan became enraged, took out a knife and stabbed Moore in the side.

He was transported to South Lincoln Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

Before police arrived on the scene, Sullivan was also taken to the same medical center for allegedly self-inflicting a knife on her wrist.

At the hospital, she stated that she stabbed Moore and was placed under arrest at the hospital.

Bond is set at $500,000 and Sullivan also had to surrender her passport, the report said.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 6, and if convicted, Sullivan faces 20 years to life in prison.

Court documents showed that the Lincoln County Despatch Center received a report at 1:02 a.m. the morning of the incident that a man had been stabbed at a County Rd address.

The victim was identified as Andrew Jacob Moore, a New Zealand citizen, who had worked at the ranch shearing sheep with a crew of sheep shearers traveling across the United States.

Sullivan was also part of the same crew, the report said.

Investigations revealed that the pair were in a relationship together and had been drinking heavily on the night of the incident along with other members of their party.

Sullivan reportedly told police that the two got into an argument while drinking and that she “went into a rage”, grabbed a knife from the counter and made stabbing motions at Moore.

She said Moore was closer to her than she had estimated so she ended up stabbing him.

The court documents also reportedly stated that Sullivan and Moore were not physically assaulted and that she was not scared when she grabbed the knife, she was just angry.

Meanwhile, close friend Michael Jefferis has started a Giveattle page to raise money to bring Moore’s body home.

“My heart goes out to the Moore family for the loss of their precious son, brother, grandson, uncle and nephew,” he wrote.

“We need help bringing our partner home.”

Jefferis, who referred to Andrew as “Moorey”, described him as “very much like a brother” and also affectionately known as “Kill” or Anaru.

“For seven years we lived and breathed shaving, touring the world, working in Scotland, Australia, the US and New Zealand. We have also competed in many speed shear competitions in Wales, Australia and New Zealand,” said Jefferis.

“I called him my brother, like many of our friends, he was absolutely the life of the party and had such a heart of gold. Andrew was a much loved person in the shaving industry and I know he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.”
