Nokia recently introduced the sixth generation supercoherent photonic service engine, PSE-6s. Nokia claims that PSE-6s can reduce network power consumption by 60 percent. In addition, PSE-6s can support high-speed services, including 800 Gigabit Ethernet over distances of 2,000 km and beyond, over long-haul networks and trans-oceanic cables.

Nokia and GlobalConnect achieve coherent transmission of 1.2 Tbps over a single wavelength

Nokia says GlobalConnect has deployed its PSE-6 supercoherent Photonic Service Engine over a 150 GHz spectrum WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) network on a live optical network in Europe to achieve 1.2 Tbps over metro distances of 118 km and 800 Long distance Gbps of 2019 km with a single wavelength. The trial was performed on GlobalConnect’s Metro Data Center connectivity links.

GlobalConnect network

With more than 150,000 km of dug fiber, GlobalConnect operates the most extensive interconnected fiber network in Northern Europe. The backbone serves as a gateway to Scandinavia and establishes connections to local networks and data centers in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands and Germany. In addition, GlobalConnect’s network provides exclusive point-to-point fiber optic interconnectivity between data centers over varying distances.

“By reducing the required number of coherent interfaces, the total cost of ownership of the network can be reduced by 50% and the network’s power consumption can be reduced by up to 60%,” says Nokia.

The sixth generation PSE can be deployed on Nokia’s 1830 family of optical transport platforms. Nokia will showcase the PSE-6s at the upcoming MWC 2023 in Barcelona.
