Ewcastle fans left huge piles of litter in Trafalgar Square as hundreds of supporters flocked to central London ahead of the Carabao Cup final.

Footage shows takeaway containers, beer bottles and plastic bags left on the street after fans forced their way into the area on Saturday night.

Supporters gathered in Trafalgar Square as the sun set, singing terrace chants together, drinking cans of ale and firing smoke bombs while dressed in the club’s black and white colours.

Footage posted after the boisterous celebrations showed some fans helping to clean up the rubbish left behind.

Mehrdad Ghodoussi, the club’s co-owner, posted a photo on social media of him and fellow director Jamie Reuben enjoying the festivities with their hoods on.

One middle-aged fan even donned his boxers to enjoy a dip in one of the square’s two fountains.

Other fans gathered around Nelson’s Column in the center of the square, which commemorates Admiral Horatio Nelson’s victory over the Spanish and French navies at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

One of the songs the supporters sang was “Tell me ma, me ma, I’m not home for tea, we’re going to Wembley”, to the tune of the 1950s hit Que Sera, Sera.

Another chant saw an alternate rendition of the gospel hymn When the Saints Go Marching In, replacing “Saints” with “Mags.”

Newcastle has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the Premier League since the arrival of Mr Ghodoussi, Mr Reuben and other new investors.

Their Saudi-led consortium has funded more than £210 million in new signings since taking over the club in October 2021.

Under Eddie Howe’s management, Newcastle are fifth in the Premier League, just one point behind Tottenham Hotspur in the final Champions League qualifying spot.

A victory over Manchester United in tomorrow’s final would secure the club a place in next season’s Europa Conference League play-offs.

It would be Newcastle’s first time playing in Europe since the 2012/13 season when they reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
