Erik ten Hag has reminded his own Manchester United players that they should expect a tough game against a tough opponent when they face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.
The Red Devils go in as favorites to lift the trophy in the north Londonafter an impressive and confidence-inspiring victory over Barcelona in the Europa League on Thursday evening.
They were not short of morale as it was after they defeated Leicester city 3-0 last time out in the Premier League, so it will be an exuberant side heading south this weekend.
However, Newcastle are also having an excellent season and are fifth in the table as Eddie Howe impressively builds them up into European challengers.
They may not be in their best form right now, without a win in three games, but they too are a confident side, with a solid defense and had a week off as the Red Devils played a tough game on Thursday night.
Ten Hag is full of respect for Howe and Newcastle and has warned his side against any complacency if they go to Wembley as favourites.
‘It’s a difficult game. It’s a tough opponent,” said Ten Hag Sky Sports. “They are so hard to beat and that’s a big compliment to them, but we have to find a way to beat them anyway. And so we did everything we could.
“I have every respect for the opponent and what manager Howe does. It’s great to see from the outside. And you also see that there is a real team and good team spirit. So yes, it will be a great match between two very good teams.’
The England star is not guaranteed to play, but it seems likely Anthony Martial will miss through injury.
