Grooved tire tracks on a grassy bank lead to a tent where police are investigating an “unexplained” death in Dunedin.

Emergency services were called to Eglinton Road in MorningtonDunedin, around 7:30 p.m. Thursday after police received “reports that a man had been attacked and run over by a vehicle”.

“Unfortunately, the man died on the spot,” said a police spokesman.

Police would not comment on the whereabouts of the driver or occupants of the vehicle, but are urging anyone with information to get in touch.

“We understand that a group of people was present at the crime scene prior to this man’s death,” they said.

On Thursday night, paramedics were seen trying to resuscitate the man before being loaded into an ambulance.

A scene investigation ensued, during which a police photographer took pictures of a parked vehicle and tire tracks.

A late model ute stays within the cordon.

That cordon continues Friday morning, with the scene adjacent to Unity Park, a popular lookout in the city.

The police continued to investigate the accident site, with two large tents at the accident site.

On Friday morning, police said the death was being treated as inexplicable.

Police wanted to hear from people who saw what happened and have not yet spoken to them.

About two hours later, emergency services responded to a two-car accident at the intersection of Gowland St and Albany St, in Dunedin North.

Meanwhile, about two hours after the Unity Park incident, emergency services were called to a two-car crash in Dunedin North near the University of Otago Central Library.

A stuff reporter on the scene described a car “wrapped around a traffic light” at the intersection of Gowland St and Albany St.

Cameron McLachlan, a senior Willowbank station officer, said a person was initially trapped in a vehicle.

A St. John spokesman said one person was seriously injured while another was moderately injured. Both were transferred to Dunedin Hospital.

A police spokesman said the road was closed for some time while emergency services responded.

Three fire trucks, two ambulances and police were on the scene.
