Social platform TikTok has announced new features for teens and families, including a 60-minute daily screen limit for all users under the age of 18. It is automatically set on each account for an hour, but users can opt out and set their own limits.
The app also adds more screen time management features, including a reminder for users who turned off the 60-minute limit but spent more than 100 minutes. Parents can control it, add an access code and extend this period to 30 minutes at a time.
The team consulted current academic research and experts at the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital to select the 60-minute limit.
Caregivers can use Family Pairing to adjust the daily screen limit, including different ones for different days of the week. They can also access the Screen Time dashboard, which details the time spent in the app, the number of times the app has been opened, and a breakdown of the total time spent.
Parents can also set more limits and mute notifications for their teens. Currently, users under the age of 15 do not receive push notifications after 9 PM, and users aged 16-17 have turned them off after 10 PM.
Screen time is a serious problem for all users, which is why TikTok brings sleep reminders to everyone. People can set a time when a pop-up reminds them to log out, leave the device and go to bed.
