“I think it’s time to quit” – The Hollywood Reporter

Downton Abbey: A New EraA spin-off of a second feature from the astoundingly successful television series of Focus Features, brought a jitter bug to cinemas earlier this year.

With some new additions to Dominic West, Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, and Nathalie Baye, in addition to the original ensemble of regulars, the film is directed by Simon Curtis on a gorgeous wedding and a gorgeous trip to society. The high-quality high jinx was lively. A meta-inclusion of a silent era Hollywood movie shot in Downton itself, south of France.

To celebrate the launch of new era Home Entertainment (released on Blu-Ray and Collector’s Edition DVD on July 5th), Hollywood Reporter I caught up with Hugh Bonneville, the lord of the manor. Downton Abbey Returning to television, why did he think the latest movie was a “good note” to conclude Crawley’s long and illustrious rule? (Some sections of the interview contain spoiler warnings for readers who have never seen the latest movie.)

Moved to another beloved franchise in which he plays the leading role, and Bonneville also spoke. PaddingtonDougal Wilson, the newly announced director of the third movie, reveals why he thought he had all the “right taste” for “taking care of bears from the darkest Peru” did.

With two Downton Abbey A movie under your belt, how do you enjoy Downton in the form of features compared to it as a television series?

Obviously, the mechanism is still pretty much the same. However, I think there is a sense of scale that was particularly captured second. The second movie really felt like a movie to me. [cinematographer] Andrew Dunn felt very gorgeous, especially when he was able to point his camera at the French skyline. In just 30 seconds or so short time in the movie, we go out on a boat from the beach, and I remember saying [director] Simon Curtis said it didn’t serve the purpose of the story at all, and he said, but it actually gives the audience a sense of place, so it’s actually the most important scene in the movie. It was one and it looked really nice on the big screen. And I think the story is a little more fulfilling than the first movie. The first movie was great, with the king and queen staying and all sorts of shenanigans going on, but from my character’s point of view, this time there was more to pierce my teeth.

[SPOILER ALERT]

new era I saw the sad death of Countess Dwager of Maggie Smith. You obviously knew it was coming, but was it still pretty emotional? Did you do anything special?

Actually, there were three farewells. There was a scene of death, so there was the last scene in the dining room. It was important because it was a very huge part of the shooting schedule every time we came. Her last shot was a very small moment in the hallway and wasn’t important, but she still left the movie. So, like all the good royalty, she got a good three-day see-off.

And did you do something off the screen with Maggie?

I think there were 3 sets of champagne. But after her last scene with Maggie, the scene of her death, we went to her dressing room and had a glass. And I was able to look back on the fact that she was my mother for 12 years, on and off. In particular, it is very noteworthy that such a legendary actress attended our show. I remember when this show was first offered by (Executive Producer) Gareth Neame, it was before someone was cast. “Well, that doesn’t happen, so do your best.” And the rest is history.

[END OF SPOILER ALERT]

Following the success of the film, NBCUniversal and the production company Carnival Downton It’s back as a TV series. Is this what you have heard? Did they ask you if you are interested in coming back?

My god, I didn’t hear it. However, if there is, I think it will be a reboot. Origin story or something like that. So this kind of show has a clear appetite. Bridgerton It has been a great success. So, if you can catch the younger generation and enjoy the Flock people, choose it. But yeah, I think it’s very unlikely that we’ll be brought back as a cast. It’s been seven years since we started doing TV shows. It was really nice to be back like these two movies, but I think we’ll have a whole new generation like this: Star Wars Spin off here and there.

But if that happens, are you interested?

I literally didn’t think about it. I have no idea. I will never say. I will do anything with the right money.

I worked very well with the critics, Downton Abbey: A New Era The box office revenue wasn’t as good as the first movie, but I think many were surprised at its success. Do you think this has something to do with the pandemic, or because of Tom Cruise, Top Gun: Maverick Will it be released soon after that?

No, it’s definitely not the old Tom. It’s definitely a pandemic and the way we watch movies. You also need to remember that the first one was a runaway success. This was the biggest hit that Focus (Features) has ever received in the United States. itbeat Brokeback Mountain We spent nearly $ 200 million on box office revenue around the world, which was astounding for a show like this. So, for the second, I don’t think anyone in particular expected Focus to work in much the same way. And we started watching movies in a completely different way, due to the brutality of the pandemic and the fact that we have, unless we intend to watch a movie of a big event. But when I go to the premiere of London, the premiere of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the United States, or my little local cinema, it’s worth noting to see something in a collective experience and see it with a group of people. Worth. Why do theaters and movies never die?

There are only two movies, Downton Abbey The feature has already been described as a franchise. I think everyone is expecting a third installment payment. Did Julian Fellowes sit down and wonder where the story goes, or have you ever wondered?

At a practical level, I think I’m running that course right now. I think it was a good time to quit. Do not know. I’m not going to guess the future again, but I thought about it for a while, in fact, yeah, why not, let’s continue. But I think it could be a little thinner. The second one was a lot of fun and I think it was a good note to end the story. And it feels like it can be done. The door is still open, but it may be a good time to quit.

I will never forgive unless I lose my job and ask about my favorite franchise. Paddington..Wheel Paddington 3 It looks like it’s finally working, with Dougal Wilson’s new director Paddington in Peru.. Are you excited about what’s finally happening?

Well, it was said that it will start this year, but it wasn’t so, so I’m salting it a little. However, Dagal is a great director and the commercials he made are very gorgeous. (From) John Lewis advertises in ads for three of my favorite mobile companies. So he has all the right taste and his spirit in him, so I can say he’s going to take care of the darkest Peruvian bear. And from that sound he will take the bear to Peru. Well, it’s said that everything will catch fire next year, which I’ve heard before.

Have you seen the script?

I saw an early draft. But they said it was so early that they weren’t there yet. So it will be sophisticated, sophisticated, worthy of its predecessor, and in honor of Michael Bond (the creator of Paddington).

first time Paddington The movie was a masterpiece and arguably the best movie ever. As one of the most important characters in the movie, do you feel pressured and worried about it? Paddington 3 If it doesn’t follow its trajectory, will it be disappointing?

No, I don’t feel any pressure. I think that’s the case with StudioCanal. So if they eavesdrop on it, fool them more! I just get up and say the line. It’s easy for me. And I can talk about it as if I made it.

Despite seeing it many times, there are still more scenes Paddington 2 It’s a difficult place to keep tears away, such as the ending when Aunt Lucy arrives. Have you ever noticed that even if you were there, you were emotional when you saw it?

no i don’t. It’s a really tough job, and in many cases I felt like I was pulling out my teeth. I absolutely recognize it as a masterpiece, but to be honest, I didn’t think it would happen.I remember telling Paul [King, director], This doesn’t work. And how wrong I was, and as you said, it’s about the best movie ever made. But it was a tough gig as Paul was worried about each scene. He wasn’t happy, so he retaken some scenes. Fortunately, he has a producer with David Heyman’s genius, and he does. So that’s as great a reason as it is thanks to Paul King. And while there are obviously great animations and collaborators, in reality, if he settles on the second best movie, it will be the second best movie. But he was really caring, really, really worked, and his imagination never stopped. I don’t want to be his wife because his imagination is constantly out.

And finally, a question that integrates both subjects. Which will stop more on the street, Sir Grantham or Henry Brown?

Actually, it’s about 50/50. I can confidently say among people under the age of eight, but it’s usually Henry Brown.
