Race Across The World is back – and so are the questionable decisions.
The BBC competition show task teams with racing between global destinations without flying or access to smartphones on a budget.
So when a couple spent $500 (£408) on a taxi on day two, it’s fair to say viewers were stunned.
Father and daughter duo Claudia and Kevin, together with their competitors the race started in the 400 acre Stanley Park in Vancouver, Canada.
Their first task was to reach Vancouver Island, which most players did by ferry.
However, they needed a way out to reach Prince Rupert, the starting point for the first checkpoint, Haida Gwaii.
But the ferry they needed (if they wanted a stress-free, low-cost trip north) only left once a week… and Claudia and Kevin managed to miss it.
Their hopes of catching a bus were also quickly dashed as they learned there were no nearby connections.
Members of staff told them a taxi would cost $500-510, leaving both Claudia and Kevin speechless.
The pair then tried car sharing, but because hitchhiking from the road was illegal in Canada, they had to approach people away from highways, which was unsuccessful.
So it had to be $500.
“I think we’re running out of time,” Kevin told his daughter after failing to get a ride from a generous stranger.
After initially saying that the idea of going to a taxi “froze” him, the father simply had to pull out his wallet.
“Look at the clouds coming down the mountainside, unbelievable,” Kevin said as he leaned back in the cab.
“Worth the $500, Dad?” Claudia joked. “Is that a $500 view?”
The pair got into some grafting by cleaning up a boat to fund a trip to Claudia’s must-see attraction, The Great Bear Rainforest.
But their taxi splurge also resurfaced and sparked a fight.
As they stopped for a pint of beer (which they certainly factored into their budget!), the duo pondered their actions.
“We went over budget, we did what we shouldn’t have done. I panicked a little when I tried to get here,” Kevin said.
Claudia responded by saying she didn’t want to change their strategy as they were eager to gain experience along the way.
“The strategy just went out the window for me after yesterday,” Kevin confessed, referring to the expenses.
“We should have done our research while we were at the garage.”
“I was running around that gas station and you just stood there!” Claudia objected.
“I was asking people for information!” Kevin defended, telling his daughter to get off her “high horse.”
“We work as a team, not as individuals,” he scolded, leaving Claudia emotional when she realized they needed to work on their communication skills.
Fortunately, they managed to put aside their differences when they boarded the ferry from Vancouver Island to the checkpoint.
Viewers at home were stunned by the pair’s decision making, however, when Twitter users asked if they had “gone crazy.”
“Not sure the tactic of getting $500 cabs everywhere will work too well,” one viewer wrote.
“Claudia and Kevin spent $500 on a cab, bought some beer and are now on a kayak through a rainforest, more of a fun than a race,” another joked.
One added, “Spent $500 and they have money for beer? Lol, they’ll be broke by the end of the week.”
Another echoed, “feeling like the $500 was a BAD move, they’ll be skinned by the time they get to the checkpoint with this rate.”
All teams managed to reach the first checkpoint on time through various means, meaning they arrived in Haida Gwaii in six days after 1,200 kilometers.
Claudia and Kevin’s total remaining budget was by far the lowest at just £3,900, but Dad Kevin was sure they could make it up – but can they?
Race Across The World continues next Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One.
