I’m an interior designer and these eight trends are so easy to maintain that you’re constantly cleaning

THERE are some home trends that might look good in theory, but the truth is they collect so much dust and grime that you’ll regret ever buying them.

The last thing anyone wants is a piece of furniture with its own daily cleaning schedule.

According to interior designer Garret LeChic, there are nine things you should never worry about, they’re just too much maintenance.

Sofas with cushions in need of a makeover

Even if your sofa cushions aren’t made entirely of down, those that need constant fluffing and padding aren’t worth it.

They may be comfortable and look great when you first pep them up, but once someone sits on the couch, they’re flat again.

Marble Countertops

If you’re chic enough to have marble countertops in your kitchen, you probably already know how maintenance it is.

It looks chic, but the truth is, it’s probably more hassle than it’s worth, especially considering the high price and the fact that there are so many cheaper alternatives that don’t stain and scratch as easily.

mohair

Authentic mohair is on the pricey side, especially when it’s authentic.

Garrett said, “It’s not always the most practical for a well-occupied home.”

He added that it’s especially bad if you have kids with sticky hands running around.

Glass tables

“I don’t feel like cleaning a table every day and always have it perfect and polished,” said the pro.

That said, glass tables can open up a lot of visual space, which is always good if you have a small room.

Garrett added, “If that’s what you need and you’re prepared to service a glass-topped table, that’s phenomenal.”

Brass hardware

Anything related to brass is very trendy right now, but if the constant maintenance isn’t for you, go for something else.

If you like the look of aged brass and don’t mind the maintenance, go ahead, “I think that’s great for you, but I don’t take care of it, I don’t polish it, I don’t clean it, I do that all not.

“I’d much rather get something I don’t have to do that with,” Garrett explained.

White sofas

“If you’re someone who uses your couch, it gets dirty,” the pro joked.

If you like the look of a white sofa, be prepared to take good care of it and have it professionally cleaned on a regular basis, otherwise it will quickly start to look dull.

Open concept spaces

Garrett said, “It’s not easy to create an open concept space that doesn’t feel like a big room with lots of furniture in it.”

Not only that, but it can feel disjointed and messy.

Unlike separate rooms where you can clean one room at a time, if you have an open concept if something is messy in your kitchen you can see it from your living room.

Black furniture and countertops

“You’ll see every bit of fabric that lands on it,” the pro told me.

If you still want to go for black furniture, Garrett recommends going for a matte option, because it can hide dust and dirt better.
