Royal family: Queen Letizia says ‘no royal friends’ for Leonor at boarding school in Wales | Royal | News

Leonor, Princess of Asturias, has recently completed the school year and has returned from her exclusive Welsh boarding school to Madrid to enjoy the summer with her sister Sofia and the rest of the family. At the boarding school, however, Leonor will have made friends from other monarchies and according to royal expert Pilar Eyre, Letizia may not be amused by that.

Ms Eyre claimed Norwegian royal Ingrid Alexandra had her 18th birthday party on June 17, hosted by King Harald and Queen Sonja.

King Felipe VI attended the ceremony, where they dined with Swedish, Danish and Norwegian royals.

However, Letizia was not present at the ceremony and refused to let her daughter Leonor, princess of Asturias, go too, it is alleged.

She suggested the Spanish queen “didn’t want Leonor to be present at the occasion” because of image concerns.

Ms Eyre wrote for the website Lecturas.com: “Letizia did not want Leonor to be there.

“Posing with the other heirs to European thrones in long dresses and crowns in a gaudy regal setting would not be the best starting point for a monarchy that pretends to be simple and democratic.”

The expert added that the event itself was not the problem, but the image conveyed by dining with other royalty prevents the Queen from attending similar events.

Ms Eyre added: “It has been one of Letizia’s workhorses to forgo all unnecessary luxuries during her husband’s eight years on the throne.”

Leonor attends the United World College of the Atlantic, a castle school in Wales linked to Prince Charles.

Princess Alexia of the Netherlands is also at the boarding school.

Louise Callaghan, a college student who later served as a foreign correspondent for The Sunday Times, explained: “(The school) is a bit like a hippie Hogwarts: full of weirdos who think they are fighting the forces of darkness.

“There are also ghosts.

“Lady Stradling haunts the historic tower and the scent of lavender and a lilac mist precedes her appearance.

“The ethos is, broadly speaking, that people from all over the world get along if you put them together in a castle.

“We proved that, some very passionately.”
