“If you act like prey, they may treat you like prey. Don’t panic, don’t turn, don’t try to get away,” he said.

“You have to stand your ground and 99.9% of the time you have a great time and then it runs its course.”

Ryan says if filtering more underwater predators in UK waters as temperatures continue to rise, swimmers will have to get ‘shark smart’.

He said: “It is important that everyone who goes into the water is informed about sharks.

“Then when they show up in strange places, we know how to react.”

Meanwhile, adventurer and TV star Bear Grylls spoke exclusively with The Sun to give his top tips on what to do if you come face to face with a shark.

“Most shark attacks are misidentified, or they’re thinking of something else. So when you see a shark, make yourself visible, make yourself strong, make sure you don’t look like prey,” he said.

“Once you panic and start pounding into that water and sending out prey-predator signals that you’re food and you’re scared and weak, that’s whether you’re up against wolves or sharks.

“You know, the signal is a very dangerous signal. So if you’re in the water with a shark, bags or trust, swim, you know it’s a strong swing pool.

“If it’s coming at you, if it looks like it’s attacking, go for it and dive in aggressively. Cause confusion in a shark’s mind. Yes, they’re unlikely to attack β€” even Great Whites.”

Bear went on to confirm that sharks “don’t want to eat you,” but tend to mistake humans for prey.

“If they see you’re human, and you’re not scared, and you swim with it, they’ll leave you alone.”

WWII Sergeant Edgar Harrell told us he… survived days in shark-infested waters off the Philippines by huddling with his navy friends.

The late American vet was on the USS Indianapolis in 1945 when it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine.

Harrell was drifting with a group of about 80 other men when dorsal fins began to cut through the waves around them.

The men clung to each other to intimidate the predators – but those weakened by injuries would lose their grip.

And once alone out in the open, the sharks would come closer.

Harrell says, “You’d hear a bloodcurdling scream and watch and see someone go down.”

And as the victims’ blood spread in the water, sharks β€” which can smell blood from up to three miles away β€” were attracted to the defenseless sailors, triggering a binge.

Harrell added: “If you get about 900 guys out there going into misery, sharks will swim through that and they’ll attack whatever’s in their way.
