Wet weather forecast today as ‘apocalyptic’ rain hits parts of Northern Ireland

Wet conditions will continue across the country today with widespread showers forecast.

et Éireann said heavy rains are expected with the occasional dry and clear spell, mainly in the east and southeast.

It comes as the UK’s Met Office has issued a yellow rain warning for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry.

The warning is in effect from noon today until 9pm tonight and the forecaster warned of “severe showers or extended periods of rain with some thunderstorms likely to cause some travel disruption and flooding”.

Six people had to be rescued by firefighters as major floods, described as “apocalyptic”, hit parts of Northern Ireland this weekend.

In parts of Derry and Strabane, Co Tyrone warned police of dangerous driving conditions.

Flooding was reported in several parts of the city of Derry, including Strand Road and Foyle Road.

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) said it received a total of 106 emergency calls from 999 floods between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, resulting in “firefighters responding to 49 operational incidents”.

Meanwhile, Met Éireann meterologist Conall Ruth said it will be quite humid and windy today with some severe and possibly thunderstorms expected.

“Today we have another fairly wet day ahead, in Connacht and Ulster showers will begin with longer showers, becoming widespread in the morning and afternoon,” he said.

However, there will also be some dry and clear periods, especially in the east and southeast with the highest temperatures between 17C and 24C, the warmest in the east, with moderate to fresh and gusty southwest winds, sometimes strong near the coast.

Mr Ruth said Monday will start cloudy with scattered showers before clearing and a few sunny spells developing over the afternoon and evening.

“It remains coolest in the northwest and the wind is mostly light to moderate and northwest and stays fresh with the coat. Highest temperatures of 15C to 19C, coolest stay in the Northwest,” he said.

“Tuesday will bring similar conditions, starting cloudy with scattered showers, but later dry with sunny spells. The highest temperatures will be in the mid to high teens. ”

The highest temperatures are between 15C and 17C with a weak west to northwest wind.

The forecaster predicts calmer conditions during the midweek as high pressure areas move across the country.

There will be plenty of dry weather with only an occasional shower, daytime temperatures generally in the mid to high teens with winds decreasing.

Wednesday there will be a mix of clouds and sunny periods, mainly dry with isolated showers in the west and north. The highest temperatures are between 16C and 19C with a light, variable breeze.

Thursday there will be a mix of clouds and clear spells with occasional showers. The highest temperatures are between 17C and 21C with a weak southwest wind.

The low pressure area will return from Friday, bringing wet conditions that will last through the weekend.

For the rest of the week, temperatures remain around the high teens or low twenties.
