Happy Mondays star Shaun Ryder has revealed how his brother Paul Ryder felt unwell this month in the hours before his sudden death.
Bassist Paul passed away on July 15th at the age of 58, the popular rock band would perform at the Kubix Festival in Sunderland on the same day.
The musician was one of the founders of Happy Mondays along with his brother Shaun, and tributes from the music industry poured in after news of his death broke.
Shaun, 59, is now open for the first time about his brother’s death, saying their mother had discovered Linda Paul in his bed after complaining that he was feeling ill after returning from the US.
“It’s crazy because he flies from LA to here all the time,” says the singer explained to The Sun.
“He lands and starts complaining about this headache. It was killing him. Our mother wanted him to go to the ER, but he said “no I have to go to rehearsals”.
“So he goes to rehearsals and he doesn’t recognize anyone from the band. He doesn’t recognize the drummer Gaz or anyone else.’
Shaun added: “He lives in LA but when we play shows he flies in and comes and stays with my mom in Salford. So he goes home and takes some more painkillers and stuff because his head is killing him.
“Then my mother goes to his room at six in the morning and he was gone, the rigor mortis had set in.”
According to Shaun, the paramedics said it “looked like it was a blood clot or a brain tumor,” but they won’t discover the cause of death until the autopsy is completed, after which they can rest him. with a funeral service.
Announcing Paul’s death on Twitter, his family wrote: ‘The Ryder family and Happy Mondays band members are deeply saddened and shocked to say that Paul Ryder passed away this morning.
‘A true pioneer and legend.
“He will be missed forever.
“We thank you for respecting the privacy of everyone involved at this time.
“Long live his funk.”
The original Happy Mondays lineup included Gary Whelan, Paul Davis and Mark Day, in addition to the Ryder brothers and Mark Day. Mark ‘Bez’ Berry joined later, before the band broke up in 1993.
