Surrey wildfire: major incident declared as massive fire breaks out – warning to the public | UK | News

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said several fire engines are currently on site. Local residents have been asked to avoid the area, close windows and doors and keep pets inside. Photos on social media show thick smoke filling the afternoon sky. Surrey Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: “We have announced a major incident at Hankley Common due to a major fire in the open air. We have several fire engines present.

There is a lot of smoke so avoid the area, windows and doors should be closed if they are in the area and pets should be kept inside.”

Waverley Beat (Surrey Police) also urged the public to avoid the affected area until further notice.

The service tweeted: “There is an increased police and fire presence at Hankley Common near Godalming due to a fire.

“We ask the public to avoid the area until further notice.”

There have been several bushfires in Surrey over the course of this month, including Bisley Ranges and Frensham.

This is also the third bushfire at Hankley Common in less than two weeks as the UK faces rising temperatures and a scorching heat wave.

The fire brigade was called on Wednesday and had warned people to stay away and to close windows and doors.

The crew stayed at the location all night and announced on Thursday that four hectares of land had burned down during the fire.
