After driving 9 miles on the wrong side of the road, a car crashed into a barrier and was hit by an oncoming vehicle, police say.

One person is in serious condition after the two crashes on the Tauranga Eastern Link, That reports SunLive.

At 9.30pm on Thursday, police were alerted to a vehicle driving against traffic on Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Rd, in Paengaroa.

“It appears that at the Domain Road roundabout, the driver entered the westbound lane and headed east for approximately 9 miles (14 km) before losing control and colliding with the wire barrier,” a police spokesman said.

Moments later, he was hit by an oncoming vehicle, the driver of which was seriously injured and had to be freed by the emergency services.

The suspected driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene.

Police said the Serious Crash Unit was investigating and investigations are ongoing, SunLive reported.

The accident forced the highway to be closed overnight and reopened around 4 a.m.
