Broadband for everyone

CommScope announced a $47 million investment to demonstrate its commitment to a once-in-a-generation infrastructure moment. The increase in fiber optic production is a step towards the ‘Broadband for everyone’ programme. The company will produce more cost-effective and easier-to-deploy fiber optic cable while creating new jobs and strengthening the supply chain in America.

CommScope has highlighted some of the benefits of expanding fiber optic cable manufacturing in the US, including the following:

  1. Accelerate broadband deployment in underserved communities by ramping up fiber optic cable production. The HeliARC lines will enable fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) deployments for up to 500,000 homes per year.
  2. Create more than 250 new jobs in the next five years, 90% of which do not require a college degree.
  3. Strengthen the US supply chain by supporting the White House’s “Made in America” initiative.
  4. Discover a new HeliARC fiber optic cable that meets the specific needs of rural deployments.
  5. Invest USD 47 million in US CapEx to expand fiber optic cable production, focusing on nationwide applications.

According to the company’s statement, broadband access enables households to participate in essential activities such as telehealth appointments, education and job opportunities. In addition, it facilitates access to the digital economy, enabling people to perform routine tasks such as paying bills online and ordering groceries. Unfortunately, one in five American households currently does not have a reliable broadband connection.

What is HeliARC?

HeliARC is a smaller and lighter cable that allows for faster installation and lower implementation costs. The smaller size and weight also reduces shipping costs, allowing more products to be shipped in one shipment, making it more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Make in America

CommScope currently operates two fiber optic cable manufacturing facilities in Catawba and Claremont, North Carolina. The production growth is partly the result of an expansion of production activities at these sites, which now also include additional production lines for the HeliARC cable series. In addition, by scaling up domestic manufacturing, CommScope is contributing to the growth of U.S. supply chain manufacturing, producing more “Made in America” products.
