Pope Francis leaves hospital after a three-day stay

The Argentine pope was expected to be fired on Saturday, Bruni said, and would preside over Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square.

The ceremony marks the beginning of Holy Week, which culminates in Easter.

Francis’s hospitalization was his second since 2021, when he underwent bowel surgery, also in Gemelli.

His increasing health problems over the past year have sparked widespread concern, including speculation that he may choose to retire rather than work for life.

His predecessor, Benedict XVI, stepped down in 2013, in a radical move not seen since the Middle Ages.

Francis marked 10 years as head of the worldwide Catholic Church earlier this month.

He has made major governance reforms and tried to forge a more open, compassionate church, although he has faced internal opposition, especially from conservatives.

He has repeatedly said he would consider resigning when his health failed him – but said last month he has no intention of stopping anytime soon.

During Mass on Palm Sunday, Francis is expected to remain seated while another cleric — likely a senior cardinal — officiates at the altar.
