Leveling Up is “defined by left-wing politicians,” complain Tory MPs

MPs are angry that Greater Manchester and the West Midlands, governed by Tory mayor Andy Street, have been chosen as ‘forerunner’ regions.

Under new agreements, they will gain more power over local transportation, including train and buses, adult training and skills, and housing.

They are also allowed to raise their own money by holding the revenue from corporate rates for 10 years, which gives them more autonomy from the central government.

Mr Gove has said the reforms will empower the people who “understand the needs of their areas better than decision makers in Whitehall”.

Tory MPs want them rolled out to other parts of the country immediately.

This comes after the government announced on Thursday that it had given its approval creating a free port location at East Midlands Airport.

Businesses will benefit from tax breaks and streamlined regulations if they operate on the site, which is expected to bring 28,000 jobs to the region.

Nottinghamshire County Council leader Mr Bradley said: “My fellow Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Council leaders have already secured a £1.4bn deal for the East Midlands as part of the East Midlands Devolution Deal, which is great news and will do so much good for so many.”
