Anti-social behavior ‘community trigger’ is far underused, Labor says

a

tool to help communities tackle anti-social behavior is largely underused, Labor said Government abandoning communities.

The so-called community trigger, relaunched in last week’s government action plan against anti-social behaviour, is used less than once a day among the Conservativesaccording to a Labor analysis.

The trigger, now called the Case Assessment of Antisocial Behavior, allows victims to challenge a local response when it is deemed inadequate.

According to government figures, by 2022 “94% of those surveyed had never heard of the tool”.

Labor said its analysis showed it was used less than once a day, despite the 1.1 million incidents of anti-social behavior recorded by police last year.

The party also pointed out that sentences for violating criminal conduct orders have fallen by more than 30% since 2018, indicating just five sentences per day.

The party has said it would solve the problem of anti-social behavior with thousands of additional neighborhood police officers and the introduction of new “respect orders” to give police stronger powers if an anti-social behavior order for adults is violated.

Yvette Cooper, the Labor shadow home secretary, said: “Anti-social behavior ruins lives without consequence. After 13 years Conservative Government, more offenders get away with it and more communities are completely abandoned.

“Labour is the party of law and order. The next Labor government will give tough new powers to the police through Respect Orders to deal with the repeat offenders who are causing misery in cities across the country.

“The Conservatives just don’t understand that anti-social behavior won’t change if we don’t have local police. So we also deploy 13,000 community police officers and PCSOs back to our cities.

“Labour’s mission will be to make Britain’s streets safe. Tackling anti-social behavior is an important part of that mission, and we have the plan to make it happen.”
