Former Chelsea striker and current England coach Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has no complaints about the dismissal of Graham Pottersaying that the poor results justified his resignation.
Potter’s spell at Stamford Bridge lasted just under seven months, producing just 12 wins in 31 matches, along with eight draws and 11 defeats.
The last of those losses came on Saturday then Aston Villa left to the west London with a 2-0 win and Potter’s fate sealed, with the Chelsea board on Sunday.
Chelsea are still in the Champions League, with a huge quarter-final draw against Real Madrid ahead, but with the Blues 11th in the Premier League, Potter couldn’t survive.
Hasselbaink is not surprised the Englishman has left, realizing that no manager can last long when results are so disappointing.
“If you play for a big club in the Premier League, you have to deliver results and those results are not there,” the Dutchman told Sky Sports .
“I thought Potter’s appointment was okay, it just didn’t work out.
“He came in September, had a lot of problems with injuries and couldn’t really get them going.
“You know what’s going to happen if you don’t win games, it’s only going to take so long for them to start changing something.”
While Hasselbaink is not surprised by the dismissal and believes the results justified it, he had called on Potter to stay immediately after the Villa match.
“You’ve decided to go with young players, so you have to give them time to make mistakes and do well,” he said.
“You have to give them time, otherwise they will never become the final product if they don’t go through this period.
“And you made the decision to go for Potter. Right now they’re going through a tough time, but I think you should stick with him. You’ve gone with young players and Potter, stick with the project.’
