TL;DR

  • Unconfirmed reports about the Google Pixel 6a are being posted on YouTube and Reddit.
  • The reports claim that the fingerprint sensor of the new phone can unlock the phone for anyone.
  • Google has not yet addressed these reports.

The Google Pixel 6a won’t be officially launched until later this week, on July 28. However, some people have gotten their hands on the budget Android phone and a few of them are reporting what could be a major problem with the in-display fingerprint sensor.

According to posts on redditalong with a couple Youtube videos(through Phandroid) some people who have the Pixel 6a claim that the fingerprint sensor can be unlocked for anyone using it, regardless of who set up the scanner first. If these reports are true, it’s a pretty big security bug.

It is important to note that these reports have not been confirmed as a real problem. Google has not officially addressed these issues either. Hopefully we’ll get some clarification on these bug rumours in the very near future. And if true, hopefully it’ll be as simple as a quick patch via a software update. In our own experience with our Pixel 6a unit, it didn’t allow unregistered fingerprints to be used.
