People will form 'deep relationships' with AI bots as the technology becomes more powerful, the Google boss predicts

AI is becoming so compelling that it's inevitable that people will form a “deep relationship” with bots, Google's boss said.

CEO Sundar Pichai, 51, says the world must prepare for all possibilities AI technology is developing rapidly.

Googling unleashed a series of major AI changes at a major event in San Francisco this week, shortly after the high-profile announcements of Open AIthe makers of ChatGPT.

The latest version of ChatGPT has a flirty upgrade on mondayprogrammed to respond cheekily to compliments with a giggle and saying, “Oh stop, you're making me blush.”

Meanwhile, Google's own Gemini AI system is being injected into more of the company's popular products products like search and deeper into Android, with faster, more natural results.

Bosses showed how the AI-powered voting tool can be used looking around a room via a smartphone camera, instantly identifying objects and even remembering where you left your glasses.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, Pichai said that AI brings positive aspects, such as using it to help people with speech problems.

“There are people who will use it to preserve memories of loved ones,” he explained.

“So I think you're going to have technology that powerful, and yes, over time people are going to have a deep relationship with these AI assistants or agents etc.

“We have to prepare for all those possibilities.”

He said it is crucial that AI is approached in a “bold and responsible way”, ensuring that safeguards are carefully considered to “mitigate some of the downsides”.

CHATGPT RIVALRY

Pichai also faced pressure on new rival OpenAI, after the Microsoft-backed company unveiled an updated Chat-GPT4o that is able to solve things like homework from a piece of paper and tell a person's mood just by looking at their face.

“I think it's good to see other companies innovating,” Pichai responded.

“I think it pushes us all to do better.”
