Pupils from Riccarton School were given a practical lesson on what it takes to be a 'Road Safety Hero'.
Employees from engineering consultancy group Beca, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi and Downer Group volunteered their time to visit the school on Wednesday as part of New Zealand Road Safety Week.
Road Safety Week ends on Sunday and is organized by the charity Brake.
This week's initiatives include organizing a series of fun activities aimed at teaching children the importance of staying safe around roadworks.
Beca project manager Jodi Johnson said many people are working to make our roads safer.
“We encourage them to be road safety heroes and understand who the road safety heroes are on that road, keep them safe and look after our communities.”
Riccarton School was one of sixteen schools in New Zealand to be visited by the road safety team.
Teacher Haley Forrester said with all the roadwork around Christchurch at the moment, the team's visit was timely.
'We want our children to know what to do when they're around – not to just get really close to things, because obviously there are a lot of dangers and things that aren't safe. “
She said the students learned a lot from their practical lessons and hopes it will have a positive impact on their lives.
