Blood vials addressed to the ex-president Donald Trump were sent to the political committee expected to announce him as their 2024 presidential candidate.

Two vials were discovered at the headquarters of the Republican National Committee (RNC). Washington, DCon Wednesday morning.

The vials forced an evacuation of the headquarters and hazardous materials teams responded to the scene just southwest of the site US Capitol.

It was not immediately clear if any messages were attached to the suspicious items.

RNC Chairman Michael Whatley called it a “repugnant attack.”

The mysterious incident occurred less than two months before the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where the RNC will officially nominate Trump as its 2024 candidate.

Whatley thanked police for a quick response.

“The lockdown has been lifted and staff have resumed their office duties as we will not be intimidated or deterred in our efforts to elect President Trump to the White House,” he stated.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that “any kind of threat” has “no place in our politics, no place anywhere.”

RNC attorney Todd Steggerda sent a letter to the Secret Service in April calling on officials to keep protesters, who are expected to attend the convention in July, further away from the site. Steggerda said the existing plan “creates an increased and unsustainable safety risk for the public present.”

Trump's daughter-in-law Lara Trump, who is married to his second eldest son Eric Trump, was recently selected to serve as co-chair of the RNC.

“My main goal is to ensure that Donald Trump becomes the 47th president,” she said on Wednesday.

a Bloomberg News/Morning Consult survey released on the same day showed Trump narrowly leading the president Joe Biden in five swing states. Trump leads Biden 49% to 44% in Arizona, 47% to 44% in Georgia, 49% to 42% in North Carolina, 48% to 46% in Pennsylvania and 47% to 46% in Wisconsin.
