A tsunami warning for Tonga has been withdrawn by the meteorological service.
Tonga's Metservice issued the warning just before 10am local time.
By 11 a.m., based on tide gauges and advice from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, the main threat had passed.
Small unusual waves, currents and abnormal tides may continue to affect some beaches and harbors for hours.
According to the US Geological Survey, the kingdom was rocked by a magnitude 6.6 earthquake 70 km northwest of Fangale'ounga.
The USGS said the earthquake was 70 miles (112 kilometers) deep.
